450 Sutter Street

Introduction

450 Sutter Street, also called the Four Fifty Sutter Building, is a tall building with twenty-six floors. It is 105 meters (344 feet) high and is located in San Francisco, California. The building was finished in 1929.

Design and Style

The building is famous for its special style called "Neo-Mayan" Art Deco. It was designed by an architect named Timothy L. Pflueger. Because of its unique look, it inspired another architect, Pietro Belluschi, to design a similar style for another famous building in San Francisco called 555 California. That building was finished in 1969.

Current Use

Today, many doctors and dentists have their offices inside 450 Sutter Street. This makes it an important place for health care in the city.

History

In the 1960s, a doctor named Harry Benjamin worked in this building during the summer. He helped many people who wanted to change their gender. Many of his patients lived nearby in the Tenderloin neighborhood.

In popular culture

The building at 450 Sutter Street inspired parts of the game Grim Fandango. The game's designer, Tim Schafer, used the building as a model for one of the game's important places. He knew the building well because his dentist's office was there.

The building also appears in the 2003 video game SimCity 4 as a fictional office tower called "Vu Financial."
