Academia Colombiana de la Lengua

The Academia Colombiana de la Lengua is a group of teachers and experts who study how people use the Spanish language in Colombia. This group is in Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. The Academia Colombiana de la Lengua works with other similar groups from different countries in an organization called the Association of Spanish Language Academies. Their goal is to help improve and protect the Spanish language, making sure it is used correctly and beautifully by everyone in Colombia and around the world.

History

The Academia Colombiana de la Lengua is the oldest Spanish language academy in Latin America. It was founded in 1871 by important writers and language experts, including Jose Maria Vergara y Vergara, Manuel María Mallarino, Rufino José Cuervo, and Miguel Antonio Caro.

The academy’s first building was torn down. Today, it is in a neoclassical-style building designed by Spanish architect Alfredo Rodríguez Ordaz. Since 1960, the academy has helped the Colombian government with language questions. Many famous people have been members of the academy over the years.

Library

The library of the Colombian Academy of Language was organized by an academic named Manuel José Forero. The books and materials are grouped into collections based on who donated them or who originally owned them.
