Actinoceras
Actinoceras is a genus of extinct cephalopod that lived from the middle Ordovician to the Early Silurian. It is the type genus of the Actinoceratidae, a family of nautiloids that lived in the waters of North America and Eurasia during the Paleozoic era. The first and type species, A. bigsbyi, was named in 1835 for John Jeremaiah Bigsby. It was found in the limestones of Lake Huron. Since then, scientists have described more than 45 species from North America, parts of Baltic Europe, and Siberia.
By actinoceratid standards, Actinoceras was quite large, with a shell up to 1 m (3.3 ft) long. The shape of its shell changed between species, but it was usually straight. In most species, it was fusiform (wide in the middle and narrower at both ends). Some species curved downward toward the tip. The chambers of Actinoceras shells were short, with septa close together. The outside of the shell would have been smooth. All species seem to have lived low in the water, in a benthic environment.
History of study
The first Actinoceras fossils were found in the limestones of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes. A German scientist named Heinrich Georg Bronn studied these fossils. He first called them Actinoceratites in 1834, then gave them the name Actinoceras in 1835. The main species, A. bigsbyi, was named after John Jeremaiah Bigsby.
In 1853, a scientist named Louis Saemann made the family Actinoceratidae for Actinoceras and similar creatures. These animals had large shells with rounded ends and special internal parts called siphuncles.
Description
Actinoceras was a large ancient sea creature with a straight shell that grew up to about 1 meter (3.3 feet) long. Its shell was usually round when seen from the side, but this shape changed between different kinds of Actinoceras.
The shells of Actinoceras were straight and long, sometimes shaped like a spindle. In some types, the shell curved inward toward the tip. The chambers inside the shell were short and had special layers. The lines separating these chambers were close together, and the outside of the shell was smooth.
The siphuncle—a tube running through the shell—was large and sat below the center of the shell. It started with segments that changed as the creature grew older.
Taxonomy
Actinoceras were ancient sea creatures that lived long ago, from the middle Ordovician to the early Silurian period. They were part of a group of animals called nautiloids. Scientists have found them in places like North America, parts of Europe, and Siberia.
Researchers have found about 45 different species of Actinoceras in North America, including areas such as Greenland and the Canadian Arctic.

Palaeoecology
It can be hard to know how most actinoceroids lived. In 1935, a scientist named Curt Teichert studied the inside of their shells. He thought that some Actinoceras species, with heavy parts and special layers, lived near the bottom of the water. Others, without these features, might have been able to swim a little but mostly stayed close to the bottom too.
