Adrian Fontes

Adrian Fontes was born on April 3, 1970. He is an American politician and lawyer. He belongs to the Democratic Party. Since 2023, he has been the Secretary of State of Arizona. He won this job in 2022, beating the Republican candidate, Mark Finchem.
Before this, Fontes worked as the Maricopa County Recorder from 2017 to 2021. In these jobs, he helped with important government work and supported fair elections in Arizona.
Early life and career
Adrian Fontes grew up in Nogales, Arizona. His family has lived in southern Arizona for over 300 years, even before it became a state. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1992 to 1996. After that, he earned a bachelor's degree in Communications from Arizona State University in 1998. He then went to the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver and graduated in 2000 with a Juris Doctor degree.
Fontes worked as a prosecutor in the Denver District Attorney's Office, Maricopa County Attorney's Office, and the Arizona Attorney General's Office. He has also worked as an attorney in private practice.
Maricopa County Recorder (2017–2021)
Fontes was the Maricopa County Recorder from 2017 to 2021. He won the election in 2016 and was the first Democrat to hold this job in over 50 years. While he was in office, he created vote centers so any voter in the county could cast a ballot more easily. He also added more early voting options to help people vote.
In 2020, Fontes tried to be re-elected but lost by a very small margin. During that election, there were protests outside the office where ballots were being counted. Fontes was worried for his safety and his family's, but there was no real danger. After leaving office, he helped another county with its election transition. Fontes spoke out against attempts to question the 2021 election results, stressing the importance of protecting election officials from unfair treatment.
Arizona Secretary of State (2023–present)
Adrian Fontes chose to run for the position of Arizona Secretary of State in 2022. He won the Democratic primary in August 2022 with most of the votes. In the final election in November, he faced a Republican candidate named Mark Finchem and won. He became the Secretary of State of Arizona in 2023.
Electoral history
Adrian Fontes has taken part in many important elections. In 2016 and 2020, he was elected as the Maricopa County Recorder. In 2022, he ran for Arizona Secretary of State and won, and he now holds that office.
