Alexandria Corniche

The Corniche (Arabic: الكورنيش, El Kornesh) is a beautiful waterfront promenade corniche in Alexandria, Egypt. It runs along the Eastern Harbour and is one of the main roads in the city.

The Corniche was designed by the talented Italian-Egyptian architect Pietro Avoscani in 1870. Building began during the time of Ismail Sedki Pasha and under the rule of King Fuad I in 1925. The Corniche was opened to the public in 1935.

It stretches for over ten miles, starting from the Bahri area near the Citadel of Qaitbay in the west, where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The Corniche ends in the Mandara area of the Montaza district in the east, offering lovely views and a pleasant walk along the sea.

History

The Alexandria Corniche began construction in 1925 and was completed about ten years later in 1934. It was built in six sections, starting close to Silsila and Shatby, and ending near Montazah Palace.

In 2001, the road was changed to make it wider. Some beaches were removed, and a new bridge was added. In the early 2020s, more changes were made to widen the road, which made some beaches smaller and added new walking areas.
