Amoeba proteus

Amoeba proteus is a large type of amoeba related to another group called Chaos. Because of this, it is also known as Chaos diffluens.
This tiny creature moves and catches food using special parts called pseudopodia. It lives in freshwater places and eats smaller unicellular organisms such as protozoans, algae, rotifers, and tiny amoebae. When it catches food, it wraps it inside its cytoplasm in a space called a food vacuole, where enzymes break the food down slowly.
A. proteus has a thick nucleus filled with chromatin, making it a eukaryote. Its outer layer, or membrane, is made of a special kind of fat, like in many other cells. This amoeba is colorless, but it may look colored because of the food inside it.
History
The amoeba was first described in 1755 by August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof. He called it the "little Proteus" and drew pictures of it. Later, other scientists gave it different names. For example, Carl Linnaeus called it Chaos protheus in 1758, and Otto Friedrich Müller named it Proteus diffluens in 1786. Finally, in 1878, Joseph Leidy gave it the name we use today, Amoeba proteus.
Locomotion patterns
Amoeba proteus moves in a way that looks random but is controlled by a few important processes. These include changes in the cell's material and flow of its inner parts. Special proteins help organize these movements, allowing the amoeba to crawl using extensions called pseudopodia.
Reproduction
Amoeba proteus has many important proteins, but scientists do not know if it has special ways to reproduce or mix genetic material.
