Australian Institute of Marine Science

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is a tropical marine research centre. It is mainly located at Cape Ferguson in the locality of Cape Cleveland, Queensland, Australia. This important centre is about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the city of Townsville. Scientists at AIMS study the ocean and its creatures to help protect and understand our marine world. Their work supports the health of coral reefs and other important underwater ecosystems.

History

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) started in 1972 by the McMahon government.

In September 1973, the newspaper The Townsville Daily Bulletin said a place south of Townsville was likely to be chosen for the institute. It would be Australia’s largest marine science institute and was expected to cost between $7 million and $8 million.

Description

The Australian Institute of Marine Science helps protect and care for the ocean. They study many things about the sea, from big ecosystems to tiny germs.

Their work helps important places like the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Marine Park. They look at problems such as changes in the climate, damage to coral, and pollution in the water.

The main office is near Townsville, Queensland, close to the Great Barrier Reef. This location makes it easy to bring sea samples to the lab. There are also smaller offices in Perth and Darwin to work with partners in those areas.

Marine science developments

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) helps protect the ocean through important projects across Australia. In 2012, Australia spent money to improve tools and systems for caring for the sea.

In December 2020, the Institute found a very old fish, called the midnight snapper. Scientists discovered that this fish was 81 years old.
