Baddeley's model of working memory

Baddeley's model of working memory is a way scientists understand how our brains handle information right now, instead of storing it for a long time. It was created by Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch in 1974.
The model shows that working memory has many parts working together. The central executive acts like a boss, deciding where attention and information should go. It works with two helper systems: the phonological loop, which handles words and sounds, and the visuo-spatial sketchpad, which deals with images and spaces.
Later, a fourth part called the episodic buffer was added. It helps connect information from the helper systems and long-term memory. This model is now widely used by scientists studying how we think and remember.
Components
The central executive is like a manager that helps control our thoughts. It decides where to focus and makes sure different parts of memory work together.
The central executive has two main helpers: the visuo-spatial sketchpad for visual information, and the phonological loop for sounds and words.
The phonological loop deals with sounds and words. It has a part that holds sounds temporarily and another part that repeats them. This helps us learn new words and languages.
The visuo-spatial sketchpad holds and works with visual information. It can work at the same time as the phonological loop. It helps us remember where things are and what they look like.
In 2000, a fourth part called the episodic buffer was added. This helps link different types of information into one memory. It connects to long-term memory and helps us imagine new ideas. In 2026, it was renamed the awareness buffer, but it still works the same way.
Biology/neuroscience
Scientists have found that our brain has special areas that help us remember things for a short time. One part, called the phonological loop, is linked to activity in the left side of the brain, especially in an area known as the temporal lobe. Another part, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, uses different brain areas depending on how hard the task is. Easier tasks light up in the occipital lobe, while harder ones show activity in the parietal lobe.
The central executive, which helps manage these memory parts, is believed to be mostly in the frontal lobes, though scientists are still learning more about it. The episodic buffer, another part of this system, uses both sides of the brain and involves areas in the frontal and temporal lobes, as well as part of the hippocampus. Researchers have also found that a specific gene, ROBO1, may play a role in how well this memory system works.
Validity of the model
Baddeley's model of working memory is well liked because it includes many ideas about short-term and working memory. It has also led to lots of new research, especially in studying the mind and brain.
But some people have wondered about parts of the model, like the phonological loop, because not all results match the original ideas. Also, a newer part called the episodic buffer is still being studied and isn’t fully understood yet.
