Bolivia at the 1984 Summer Olympics

Bolivia competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States. This was important because Bolivia was returning to the Olympics. Many countries, including Bolivia, did not go to the 1980 Olympics because of a disagreement.
Eleven athletes from Bolivia joined the Games. There were ten men and one woman. They took part in eleven events in six sports. This showed Bolivia’s wish to be part of the international sports community again.
Prior to the Games
In 1984, Bolivia's president said the country could not send athletes to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles because of money problems. Some sports leaders and politicians disagreed. Later, after a newspaper article caused upset, the president briefly said they would boycott the Games. But after the newspaper apologized, the decision was changed, and eleven athletes from Bolivia did compete in the Olympics.
Athletics

Bolivia had athletes in several running events at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Juan Camacho ran the men's marathon and finished in 38th place. Oswaldo Morejón took part in the men's 20 km walk and finished in 36th place. Osvaldo Morejón also competed in the men's 50 km walk but did not finish the race. Nelly Chávez was the only woman from Bolivia and she ran the women's marathon, finishing in 42nd place.
Boxing

Bolivia had boxers in two weight groups at the 1984 Summer Olympics. René Centellas fought in the Men's Flyweight group and lost his first match. Marvin Perez was ready to fight in the Men's Heavyweight group but could not continue because of an injury before his second match.
Fencing

One man from Bolivia took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics. He fenced in two events: men's foil and men's épée. His name was Saúl Mendoza.
Judo

Men's Competition
Bolivia had one athlete in judo at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Edgar Claure competed for Bolivia in the men's events.
Shooting

Men's Competition
Bolivia had four men in the shooting events at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The athletes were Javier Asbun, Víctor Hugo Campos, Luis Gamarra, and Mauricio Kattan. They competed in the men's shooting competition at the Games in Los Angeles.

Men's Competition
In the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Bolivia joined in the wrestling events. One athlete was Leonardo Camacho, who competed in the men's events. This was Bolivia's return to the Olympics after not joining the games in 1980.
