The Caelian Hill (/ˈsiːliən/ SEE-lee-ən_; Latin: Collis Caelius; Italian: Celio ) is one of the famous seven hills of Rome. It has been important in the history and growth of the city. Over many years, the hill became home to many important buildings and monuments. People have lived on Caelian Hill since ancient times, and it is still a key part of Rome’s rich culture today.
Geography
The Caelian Hill is one of the famous seven hills of Rome. It is about 2 kilometers long and up to 500 meters wide, and it rises about 50 meters tall. From the hill, you can see a wide plateau where other hills like the Esquiline, Viminal, and Quirinal are located.
A smaller part of the hill, called Caeliolus, is near the valley where important landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati stand today.
History
Under the rule of Tullus Hostilius, people from Alba Longa were moved to live on the Caelian Hill. The hill may have been named after an Etruscan hero called Caelius Vibenna. Later, during the time of Ancus Marcius, the hill became part of the growing city of Rome.
In later years, the Caelian Hill became a favorite place for wealthy people to live. Important buildings and homes were built there. During the time of the Roman emperors, many grand structures were constructed, including temples and large houses. The hill also had military barracks and was the site of important events.
In the years that followed, the hill became a center for Christian worship with many churches and monasteries being built. Today, the Caelian Hill remains an important part of Rome, housing medical facilities and remembering its long history.
Monuments
The Caelian Hill in Rome has many important old buildings and structures. Some famous monuments include the Temple of Claudius, the Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati, and the Arch of Dolabella. Other important sites are the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Church of San Gregorio al Celio, and the Villa Celimontana. These monuments show the rich history and beautiful architecture of this well-known hill.
