Carbonate rock

Carbonate rocks are special rocks made mostly from carbonate minerals. The two main types are limestone, which is made from calcite or aragonite, and dolomite rock, also called dolostone, which is made from a mineral called dolomite. These rocks can be found in many places and come in different textures and sizes.
These rocks help us learn about Earth's past. When carbonate rocks change over time due to heat and pressure, they can turn into marble. There are also rare kinds of carbonate rocks that form from volcanic activity.
Scientists study carbonate rocks to understand how Earth's climate has changed over millions of years. By looking at these rocks, they can learn about ancient temperatures and conditions, helping us understand how our planet has changed.
Limestone
Limestone is the most common type of carbonate rock. It is a sedimentary rock made from calcium carbonate. This can appear in two forms called calcite and aragonite. Though these have the same chemical makeup, they look and behave differently.
Calcite can dissolve in water or form solid layers, depending on the water temperature. One interesting fact is that calcite becomes less able to dissolve when the water gets hotter. When conditions allow, calcite can stick together bits of rocks or fill in cracks.
Compared to calcite, aragonite is less stable and can change into calcite. In water, tiny bits called magnesium ions can help aragonite form. This often happens in living things that use calcium carbonate to build their skeletons and shells.
Dolostone
Dolostone, also called dolomite rock, was found in 1791 and is found all over the world. It is made from calcium, magnesium, and carbonate, which gives it a crystal shape like other minerals such as calcite and magnesite.
There are different kinds of dolostone depending on what it contains. Calcian dolomite has more calcium than magnesium and is the most common type in nature. Ferroan dolomite, or ankerite, contains iron and can sometimes have manganese instead of magnesium. Scientists are still learning more about the differences between these types.

Carbonate rocks help us learn about Earth's past and give us important materials we use today, like concrete.
