Charles III

Charles III, born Charles Philip Arthur George on 14 November 1948, is the King of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. He is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Charles became the heir to the throne when his mother became queen in 1952. He was named Prince of Wales in 1958.

Charles was educated at several schools and later studied history at the University of Cambridge. He also served in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. In 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer, and they had two sons, William and Harry. After their divorce in 1996, Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

As heir to the throne, Charles worked hard on many projects to help people. He started the Prince's Trust in 1976 to support young people and helped many charities. He cared deeply about protecting historic buildings, supporting organic farming, and taking action on climate change. Charles also wrote or helped write books on different topics.

Charles became king when his mother passed away in 2022. Important events in his time as king include his coronation in 2023.

Early life, family, and education

Charles was born on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace. He is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. When he was very young, his mother became queen, and Charles became the heir apparent, meaning he would one day be king.

Charles went to several schools, which was different from other royal children who were usually taught at home. He attended Hill House School in West London, Cheam School in Hampshire, and Gordonstoun in Moray. He later went to the University of Cambridge and became the first British heir apparent to earn a university degree.

Prince of Wales

Charles was named Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 26 July 1958, but his special ceremony happened later on 1 July 1969. During this event, his mother crowned him at Caernarfon Castle and it was shown on TV.

He began doing public work, creating a charity called the Prince's Trust in 1976 and visiting the United States in 1981. There was once a plan for him to be a leader in Australia, but it did not happen because not many people wanted it.

Military training and career

Charles learned to fly planes and served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy during the 1970s. He started training in 1969 while he was at university, learning to fly a small plane. He later served on ships and learned to fly helicopters. He stopped flying after an accident in 1994.

When he was young, Charles dated several women, including Georgiana Russell, Lady Jane Wellesley, Davina Sheffield, Lady Sarah Spencer, and Camilla Shand.

Charles first met Lady Diana Spencer in 1977. They started dating in 1980 and got married on 29 July at St Paul's Cathedral. They had two children, William and Harry. Their marriage had problems and they separated in 1992. Diana passed away in 1997.

Camilla Parker Bowles

Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles knew each other before they were married. After both of them divorced, they became a couple. They got married in 2005 and she has been with him at many public events since then.

Reign

Charles became king when his mother died on September 8, 2022. He was the oldest person to become king at the age of 73. He gave his first speech the next day. He honored his mother and named his son William as Prince of Wales.

In May 2023, Charles and his wife Camilla had a big ceremony called a coronation at Westminster Abbey. After that, Charles visited many places. He went to Germany, France, Kenya, Australia, and Canada. He also met important leaders like the president of Ukraine and the pope. In April 2026, Charles spoke to a big group of people in the United States called Congress.

Health

In March 1998, Charles had a small surgery on his knee. In March 2003, he had another surgery. In 2008, doctors removed something harmless from his nose.

In January 2024, Charles had a medical procedure. During this, doctors found cancer, but they were not sure what kind. He paused some public events but kept doing important duties. He shared his support for cancer charities and stayed hopeful about getting better. In March 2025, he had a short hospital stay because of side effects from his treatment and delayed some plans.

Diet

Since 1985, Charles has thought about how much meat people eat. In 2021, he said he eats no meat or fish two days a week and no dairy one day a week. In 2022, his breakfast was fruit salad, seeds, and tea. He skips lunch and has dinner late at night. In 2022, he decided not to serve a special food at royal homes anymore. In 2023, during a special dinner, he chose not to have certain foods on the menu.

Charity work

Since starting the Prince's Trust in 1976, King Charles has created 16 more charities. These groups work together to help important causes, like education, the environment, and supporting young people. By 2020, the Prince's Trust had helped over one million young people and created 125,000 new businesses. Charles has also supported charities in Canada, Australia, and other countries.

Charles has supported humanitarian projects, such as donating his blood to raise awareness for health causes. He has taken part in events to support equality and has spoken out about important human rights issues. He has helped charities for children in need and supported peace efforts in different parts of the world.

Two of Charles's charities were looked at closely by investigators in 2021 and 2022. After looking into the matters, no further action was decided. Reports mentioned donations from 2011 to 2015 that were given to Charles, but there was no proof these were wrong or not meant for the charities. Investigations by authorities found no reason to take more steps.

Personal interests

Charles believes it is important to listen to Indigenous voices. He thinks they have good ideas about caring for the land, working together, and learning from the past. This matches his work on protecting the environment and bringing people together.

Charles has shared his ideas about building design and city planning. He has talked about what makes good architecture and has supported traditional styles.
