Discovery and Time Period
Cochlioceras was an ancient group of sea creatures that lived millions of years ago during the Ordovician period. They were part of a larger family called baltoceratid, which had straight shells.
Fossil Locations
Fossils of Cochlioceras have been found in Europe, the U.S. state of Vermont, and China. Studying these fossils helps scientists learn about old oceans and how life has changed over time. Even though these animals are gone, they give clues about Earth's history.
Taxonomy
Cochlioceras was named by Eichwald in 1860. Its main example species is called Cochlioceras avus. Scientists placed it in a group called Baltoceratidae. This group was moved between bigger families by different researchers over time.
