The culture of Cape Verde is full of color and fun traditions. People in Cape Verde love music, dance, and storytelling. These activities bring families and friends together. The islanders enjoy celebrating with festivals and special events. Their traditions mix ideas from Africa and Portugal, making life there unique and exciting.
Cuisine

In Cape Verde, a special drink called grogue is very important. It is a strong rum made from sugar cane on the islands of Santo Antao and Santiago. You can find it in towns like Paul on Santo Antao and Cidade Velha on Santiago. Another version is called ponche, which is sweetened with condensed milk or sugarcane molasses.
Corn and beans are key foods in Cape Verdean meals. Other popular foods include rice, fried potatoes, cassava, and vegetables like carrots, kale, squash, and fish and meat such as tuna, lobster, chicken, grilled pork, and eggs. The Portuguese also brought a tradition of using olives and Alentejo wines, which are still used today. One famous Cape Verdean dish is cachupa, a stew made with mashed maize, onions, green bananas, manioc, sweet potatoes, squash, and yams.
Literature

Cape Verde has a rich literary tradition, with many writers creating stories and poems. They write in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. One of the first writers to share poems called "Morna" was Eugénio Tavares. In the 1930s, magazines like Claridade and Certeza helped share work from local authors. Today, writers such as Germano Almeida and Orlanda Amarílis continue to create new stories and poems.
Music

Cape Verde is famous for Morna, a type of folk music sung in the Cape Verdean Creole language. People play Morna with instruments like the clarinet, violin, guitar, and cavaquinho. The islands also have other special music styles such as funaná, batuque, coladeira, and mazurka. Cesária Évora is a famous singer of Morna music.
Cinema

Theatre
Theatre in Cape Verde began with stories from the Bible, turned into plays. This changed by the late 1800s when cultural groups started. Modern theatre grew after Cape Verde became independent in 1975. A big help came in 1995 with the start of the theatre group Mindelact, which also holds an international theatre festival each year.
