The culture of Germany has been shaped by its place in Europe and a history that goes back many years. It is rich and full of variety, with big ideas in art, music, thinking, science, and new ways of doing things. For much of its past, Germany was not one big country, so many different local customs and traditions grew up. From the time of the old Holy Roman Empire until today, German culture has been changed by people and ideas from all over Europe and the world.

German culture puts a lot of value on learning and careful work. It has a long history of great writing, with famous authors like Goethe and Schiller. The country is also known for its beautiful music, from the music of Bach to the big, powerful songs of Beethoven. Many smart thinkers, such as Kant and Marx, have come from Germany. Germany is also famous for its fun festivals, tasty foods from many places, and for keeping its history safe while also enjoying new ideas in art, building designs, and popular culture.

Language

German is the main language spoken in Germany. It is one of the official languages of the European Union and is used in many places around the world. Besides German, people in Germany also speak Danish, Sorbian, North Frisian, Saterland Frisian, Turkish, Kurdish, Polish, Balkan languages, and Russian. German has ancient roots and is related to English and Dutch. It uses the Latin alphabet, with some extra letters like ä, ö, ü, and ß.

Many people around the world speak German, either as their first language or as a language they learned in school. The Goethe Institute helps teach German and German culture to people all over the globe.

Literature

German literature began long ago in the Middle Ages. Famous writers from this time include Walther von der Vogelweide and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Two important books are the Nibelungenlied and the Thidrekssaga.

In the 1800s, the fairy tales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm became loved by people everywhere.

Germans sometimes call their country Land der Dichter und Denker, meaning “Land of poets and thinkers.” This name is used for cities like Tübingen and Jena. The work of Luther, who translated the Bible into German, helped shape the German language. Many famous thinkers and writers are from Germany, such as Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, and Brecht. Nine Germans have won the Nobel Prize in Literature for their great books and poems.

Philosophy

German thinkers have had a big impact on ideas around the world. Since the Middle Ages, philosophers like Albertus Magnus have helped shape how people think. Later, important figures such as Leibniz and Kant changed the way we understand the world. Their ideas inspired others like Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Hegel.

In the 19th century, Marx and Engels shared ideas about how societies could change. Today, Germany remains a place where new thoughts and theories grow, especially in how we think and understand life.

Military

The military has played an important role in Germany's history. In the 1700s, Prussia grew strong under a leader named Frederick the Great. Later, in 1871, Germany united and created an army that was part of World War I. After World War II, Germany was not allowed to have a large army, but in 1955, it formed the Bundeswehr to work with NATO.

Today, the Bundeswehr is one of the larger armies in Europe, with many people working to keep the country safe.

Music

Germany has a rich musical history. Famous composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven helped shape classical music. Their beautiful songs are still enjoyed today. Germany also helped develop rock, heavy metal, and electronic music.

Well-known German music groups and artists include Scorpions, Rammstein, and Nena. The country hosts big music festivals like Rock am Ring and Wacken Open Air. People from around the world come to enjoy live music there. Germany remains a leader in creating new and exciting music.

Cinema

German cinema has a long history, starting very early. During a time called the Weimar Republic, directors like Robert Wiene and Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau made important films. The director Fritz Lang, who was born in Austria, also made a big impact. His famous silent film Metropolis from 1927 helped start the science fiction genre.

Today, German directors keep making films that people love everywhere. Movies like Good Bye Lenin! and Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) have won awards and been watched by many. The Berlin Film Festival is one of the largest film festivals in the world, celebrating films from many countries.

Germany has a large and active television world. Many homes watch many different channels. Most people get TV through cable or satellite. There are free channels and channels you need to pay for. Popular shows often include fun reality TV programs.

Germany is also a place where big companies make books, newspapers, and magazines. Every year, many books are printed. Germany is known for having some of the most read newspapers and magazines in Europe. Even though more people read news online, many still enjoy reading a printed newspaper every day. The Frankfurt Book Fair is a famous event where people talk about and buy books from all over the world.

Architecture and World Heritage

Germany has made many important contributions to architecture. Early styles from the country include the Carolingian and Ottonian, which helped shape Romanesque architecture. Later, Germany also played a key role in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

In the early modern period, Germany was very influential through movements like the Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus. After World War II, many new modern buildings were created. Today, Germany has many places listed as important heritage sites by UNESCO.

Art

German art has a long and rich history, from old paintings to modern works. Many famous artists, like Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach the Elder, were from Germany. Today, Germany has many galleries and art fairs, such as Art Cologne, where people can see beautiful art from around the world.

Politics

Germany is a country where people choose their leaders in elections. Two groups help make laws: the Bundestag and the Bundesrat. The Bundestag is chosen by people, and the Bundesrat has leaders from Germany’s sixteen states. They all follow rules in a special book called the Grundgesetz (Basic Law).

The president is the head of state and represents the country. The chancellor is the head of government and leads the country with a team called the Cabinet. Two big groups, the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany, have been important for many years. Smaller groups like the Free Democratic Party and Alliance 90/The Greens sometimes help too.

Religion

Christianity came to Germany around 300 AD. It grew when a leader named Charlemagne was in power. In the 1500s, Martin Luther started the Reformation. Many people left the Catholic Church and became Protestant.

Today, many people in Germany are Christian. Some are Roman Catholic, and others are Protestant. The north and east are more Protestant. The south and west are more Catholic.

Germany has small groups of Jewish people and Muslim people. Many Muslims have family from Turkey. Germany has been home to important religious leaders like Martin Luther and Pope Benedict XVI.

Holidays and celebrations

Germany has many special days and celebrations. One famous event is Oktoberfest in Munich. It is a big festival with fun activities. The country also has lively carnival traditions and unique ways of celebrating Christmas, called Weihnachten. On October 3, Germany marks its national day, German Unity Day, to remember an important moment in its history.

Germany has many famous inventors and engineers. Johannes Gutenberg helped create movable type printing. Hans Geiger made the Geiger counter, and Konrad Zuse built the first computer. German inventors have helped make modern cars, airplanes, and space travel possible.

Great thinkers like Albert Einstein, Max Planck, and Werner Heisenberg helped us understand physics better. Germany has a strong history in science and has won many Nobel Prize in Physics. Today, Germany is still a top country for science, with some of Europe’s best schools in cities like Munich and Berlin.

Fashion and design

German designers have helped shape how many modern things look. Famous names include Mies van der Rohe and Dieter Rams. Germany is important in the world of fashion, with many companies making clothes and textiles. Berlin is a key place for new fashion. It holds Berlin Fashion Week twice a year and hosts Europe's largest fashion trade fair called Bread & Butter.

Other important cities for fashion in Germany include Munich, Hamburg, and Düsseldorf. Famous German fashion designers include Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Wolfgang Joop, Philipp Plein, and Michael Michalsky. Well-known brands are Hugo Boss, Escada, and Triumph, along with special clothing companies like Adidas, PUMA, and Jack Wolfskin. German models such as Claudia Schiffer, Heidi Klum, Tatjana Patitz, and Nadja Auermann became famous around the world.

Cuisine

German food changes a lot depending on where you are in the country. In the south, places like Bavaria and Swabia cook similar foods to nearby Switzerland and Austria. Common meals include sausage. Pork, beef, and chicken are popular meats.

Breakfast in Germany often includes bread, rolls, jam, cheese, and sometimes eggs. Lunch is usually a big meal with meat or fish, potatoes or noodles, and vegetables. Many people now eat quick lunches like Currywurst, which is sausage with fries and spicy ketchup. Dinner, called Abendbrot or "evening bread," is often lighter with meat, bread, and cheese.

Germany also enjoys foods from other countries, like pizza, pasta, and döner kebab, especially in big cities. Beer is a favorite drink.

Gaming

Germany is well-known for making many fun board games that people all over the world enjoy. Some popular games are The Settlers of Catan, where players use dice to gather resources, and Carcassonne, where players build a medieval map with tiles and small game pieces called meeples. Other well-known games include Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, and Alhambra. Germany also loves video games, with big events like the Gamescom in Cologne drawing gamers from everywhere. Some famous game series from Germany are the Anno series, The Settlers series, and Far Cry. Many skilled game developers and publishers help create these games.

Sports

Sport is very important in Germany. Many people join sports clubs, and others play sports alone. The most popular sport is football. The Germany national football team has won big tournaments several times.

Germany is also good at motorsports. Famous drivers have won many races. German car makers like BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi are known around the world. Germany has won many medals in the Olympic Games and has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Society

Germany is a modern country with many different ways of living and strong traditions in each area. The country works to treat everyone fairly, including people of all genders, those with disabilities, and people who love someone of the same gender. Laws allow couples who love each other to marry, no matter their genders.

In recent years, Germany has welcomed people from other countries. Today, most Germans believe people from all backgrounds can be part of the country, and the government helps bring in people with useful skills.

After the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Germany’s image around the world grew stronger. Many people see Germany in a very positive light, and it is often ranked among the best countries in the world. Germans also love to travel, spending more money on vacations than people from any other country. Popular places to visit include Spain, Italy, and Austria. With at least 24 days of vacation each year, Germans enjoy plenty of time to explore the world.

Leisure

In Germany, enjoying free time is very important. People spend a few hours each day doing things they love. Watching television is popular, especially on Sundays when many shops and restaurants are closed.

Many Germans like to stay active. Millions of people join sports clubs to meet others who love sports. Most people exercise at least once a week. Germany has a tradition called Freikörperkultur, or free body culture. This encourages people to be outside without clothes for health reasons. This happens in parks, beaches, and lakes as a way to enjoy nature. People also like to relax in saunas, warm places where they sit without clothes to feel refreshed.
