Population
Long ago, in the 1700s and 1800s, the number of people in Edinburgh grew very fast. It started with about 49,000 people in 1751 and reached 136,000 by 1831. Many people moved into the city from the countryside. As more people arrived, the old parts of the city became very crowded, especially in the narrow buildings called tenements along the Royal Mile and Cowgate. The poor living conditions caused many health problems, including sickness like cholera in several years.

National identity
In 2022, people in Edinburgh were asked about their identity. Of the 514,543 people living there, almost half, or 47.9%, said they felt only Scottish identity. About 16.6% felt only British, and 8.9% felt both Scottish and British. Some people chose other identities, with 5.0% picking other UK identities like English, and 16.5% choosing identities outside the UK. A small group, 0.9%, felt both a UK identity and another identity.
