Flint
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Flint is a hard, dark rock made mostly of silicon dioxide (SiO2). It forms in small pieces called nodules inside certain rocks, like chalk and limestone. You can often find these nodules near streams and beaches. When broken, flint creates very sharp edges, which made it very useful to ancient people.
Long ago, people used flint to make stone tools such as knife blades and scrapers. The use of flint for tools goes back more than three million years! Because it was so important, people would travel far or trade with others to get flint. For example, Grime's Graves was a major source of flint in Europe, and Flint Ridge in Ohio supplied Native Americans who traded the stone across much of North America.
Flint can also make sparks when struck against steel. These sparks could start a fire with tinder, or ignite gunpowder in old weapons like the flintlock. Even though newer materials like ferrocerium have replaced flint for these uses, the name "flint" is still used to describe fire starters today.
Origin
Flint forms in old rock layers through chemical changes. It may start as jelly-like material that fills spaces in rock and turns into flint over time.
Large areas of flint are found in places like Europe. Special giant flint shapes called paramoudra and flint circles appear on beaches in areas such as Norfolk, England. Ohio’s official gemstone is “Ohio flint,” made from old sea deposits that hardened and mixed with silica. This flint comes in many colors like red, green, pink, blue, white, and grey. It can also be sandy brown, grey, black, reddish brown, or off-white.
Uses
Flint was very important a long time ago for making tools. When you hit flint with a hard object, it breaks into sharp pieces called flakes. People used these sharp pieces to make tools during the Stone Age.
Flint was also used to start fires. When you hit flint against steel, it makes sparks that can light kindling. Later, people used flint in special parts of guns called flintlocks to make sparks that start explosions.
People have also used flint to build walls and buildings, especially in places where other stones were hard to find. Flint is strong and can be shaped in many ways for building. It was also used in making pottery and even jewelry a very long time ago.
