Florissant Formation

The Florissant Formation is a special rock layer found near Florissant in Teller County, Colorado. It is famous for its well-preserved fossils of insects and plants. These fossils come from mud and clay layers that are very old.
Scientists say the Florissant Formation is from the Eocene time period, about 34 million years ago.
The fossils are well preserved because of a special process. Volcanic ash from the nearby Thirtynine Mile volcanic field mixed with tiny water plants in an old lake. When these plants fell to the lake bottom, they covered any plants or small animals that had just died. This kept them safe for us to find today. This created layers of clay and mud mixed with ash, called "paper shales," that hold the fossils in great condition.
Because of these wonderful fossils and the important history they tell, the area was made into the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. This national monument helps scientists and visitors learn about life from millions of years ago and protects this special place for everyone.
History
The name Florissant comes from a French word meaning "flowering." In the late 1800s, tourists and scientists came here to see the plants and animals and collect samples for study. One big attraction today, the Petrified Forest, lost many trees because people took pieces for collections.
In the 1860s and 1870s, scientists first mapped the area. They found and described many fossils of plants, insects, and animals. The area was officially named the Florissant Lake Beds in 1894. In 1969, it became a national monument after some disagreements between local owners and the government. Today, around 60,000 people visit each year to learn about the past. The area was renamed the Florissant Formation in 2001 to follow special naming rules for rock layers.
Geology
A long time ago, around 34 million years back, this place had a lake with redwood trees. The ground here is made from very old rocks called Pikes Peak Granite. Over time, big changes lifted up the Rocky Mountains and caused volcanic activity far away. This activity sent ash and lava into the area, which helped preserve many plants and tiny creatures as fossils.
The Florissant Formation has layers of different rocks like shale and mudstone. These layers tell the story of old lakes that came and went. Big flows of muddy water, called lahars, sometimes blocked the valley and made new lakes form. Later, volcanoes stopped erupting and slowly disappeared, leaving only hints of their past under the ground.
Not too far away, there used to be big volcanoes that erupted often. They sent ash and mud flowing through the valleys. This ash turned into rock and helped form the layers we see now. After a big mud flow blocked a valley, a huge lake formed. This lake had two stages, creating different layers of fossils and rocks. Eventually, the volcanoes quieted down and eroded away, leaving only old signs of their existence.
Fossils
The volcanic material that covered the area helped preserve many fossils in the Florissant Formation. As ash settled into the lake, it covered the bases of redwood trees, turning their trunks into stone. This kept the tree stumps perfectly preserved.
Inside the lake, layers of volcanic ash and silica built up over time. Tiny lake creatures called diatoms, with shells made of silica, grew in large numbers. When plants and animals died, their remains fell to the lake bottom, creating layers of organic material. These layers, along with ash deposits, formed thin sheets of shale. These shales hold some of the best-preserved fossils found in the formation.
Paleoflora
The Florissant Formation contains many different plant fossils, from huge redwoods to tiny pollen. The petrified forest is a major attraction, with about 30 preserved tree stumps—some of the largest in the world. Most of these stumps come from trees similar to modern coast redwoods. Scientists have studied the tree rings and estimate these trees were between 500 and 700 years old when they were buried.
Fossilized leaves, fruits, seeds, cones, and flowers are also found in the formation’s shales. Most of these plants come from trees and shrubs, and many different types of pollen have been identified.
Benthic diatoms, tiny algae with silica shells, are common in the formation. Their fossils help show how volcanic activity affected the lake’s ecosystem.
Fauna
Most of the animal fossils found at Florissant are invertebrates, but some vertebrates have also been discovered. The area was a good home for many kinds of animals, and the fossils give clues about their lives and environment.
Invertebrates
Invertebrate fossils include arthropods like spiders, millipedes, insects, and ostracods, as well as mollusks such as clams and snails. Spiders and insects are especially well represented, with over 1,500 species identified. Many types of insects have been found, including mayflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, and more. Beetles are the most common.
Ostracods, small crustaceans, are thought to have eaten algae at the bottom of the lake. Most fossil ostracods are found as shells or parts of their bodies. Snails, called gastropods, are the most common mollusks found at Florissant.
Vertebrates
Vertebrate fossils are mostly small, incomplete bones. Fish such as bowfins, suckers, catfishes, and pirate perches have been found. Most of these fish lived on the lake bottom.
A few bird fossils have been discovered, including a cuckoo, rollers, and shorebirds.
Mammal fossils are rare. One small opossum has been found, along with fragments of bones from a small horse, a brontothere, and an oreodont. Only a dozen or so mammal types have been identified so far from teeth and bone fragments.
Paleoclimate
Fossil plants, especially their leaves, help scientists learn about the ancient climate when the Florissant Formation was formed. Plants change with the climate, so studying them gives clues about past temperatures and weather.
By comparing the fossil leaves to modern plants, scientists think the average temperature was about 13 °C, warmer than today’s 4 °C. The weather also seems to have had less extreme seasons than today. Rain fell more often, mostly in late spring and early summer, with little snow in winter.
Paleohabitats
The fossils show that the area had a shallow, freshwater lake. Near the water, plants grew well, while drier plants lived on the hillsides. Tall trees like sequoias filled the valley, with smaller trees and bushes underneath.
Paleoaltitude
Early guesses placed the ancient Florissant area at lower heights than today. Newer studies using plant fossils suggest it might have been much higher. Scientists are still learning exactly how high it was.
