Forest floor

The forest floor is the bottom layer of a forest ecosystem. It is made up of dead and decaying plants like rotting wood and shed leaves. This layer connects the living parts of the forest above to the soil below. It helps move nutrients through the forest.
The forest floor is home to many tiny living things such as invertebrates, fungi, algae, bacteria, and archaea. These organisms break down dead plants and return nutrients to the soil. This helps new plants grow.
Leaf litter and other plant material on the forest floor protect the soil. They keep the soil moist and give it nutrients. This layer is important for keeping forests healthy. It can also be fuel for forest fires.
Variation
The forest floor changes based on how much plant material falls and how fast it breaks down. This depends on the location and the types of plants, like conifer trees or broadleaf trees. Forest floors are usually thicker in boreal forests and mountain forests, where things break down slowly. In tropical forests, the forest floor is often thinner because things break down quickly.
Temperate forests
The forest floor in these forests has three layers. On top is leaf litter, made from leaves and plants that haven’t broken down yet. Underneath is humus, which is plant material that has broken down. Some plants that grow here, like ferns such as bracken, have special parts underground to store food.
Tropical forests
In tropical rainforests, the soil isn’t very rich, but plants grow thick because tiny animals like termites and millipedes break down leaves and plants quickly. Only a small amount of sunlight reaches this area, so special plants like spike mosses and gingers can grow here.
