French Cerdagne

Map showing the administrative regions of Catalonia.

French Cerdagne is the northern half of Cerdanya. In 1659, an agreement called the Treaty of the Pyrenees made it part of France. The southern half stayed with Spain. Catalans often call it Upper Cerdanya. It is the only piece of French land on the Iberian Peninsula. It lies south of the Pyrenees Range, between France and Spain. The Segre river starts in French Cerdagne and flows into the Ebro. The treaty also created the Spanish exclave of Llívia. This is a small area of Spain surrounded by French Cerdagne.

French Cerdagne is part of the department of Pyrénées-Orientales. It covers an area of 539.67 km² (208.37 sq. miles). The area has many sunny days, which makes it good for special science projects. Two important facilities there are the Odeillo solar furnace and the Thémis solar power plant.
