Gershwin Prize

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is a special award. It is given to someone who has done a lot for popular music. It started in 2007 by the United States Library of Congress.

The prize is named after the brothers George and Ira Gershwin. They were great at making popular songs and music. Some of their famous songs are "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", and "Someone to Watch Over Me". They also made beautiful pieces such as Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, and an opera called Porgy and Bess.

This prize honors people who have made a big difference in music, just like the Gershwin brothers.

History

The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song started in 2007. It was made to honor great musicians. The prize is named after the Gershwin brothers, George and Ira, who wrote famous songs and music. The first award was given that same year to show how popular music has made a positive impact on the world.

Each year, the Librarian of Congress picks someone who has done a lot for popular music. In 2007, Paul Simon was the first person to get this award. Since then, many famous musicians like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and Billy Joel have been honored. Sometimes, the award goes to two people at once, like Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 2011, or Gloria and Emilio Estefan in 2019. The prize was not given in 2010, 2013, 2018, or 2021.
