Global network

A global network is any communication network that covers the whole Earth. It usually means a system that lets people talk to each other using modern technology. Older ways of sharing information, like international mail, radio, and television, are not global networks because they do not let people talk back and forth.
The first global network was made using electrical telegraphy and it covered the world by 1899. The telephony network became global in the 1950s. Today, the biggest global networks are the Internet and the mobile communication network.
Building a global network takes many years and a lot of money. It needs special machines like switching and routing devices, long cables under the ocean and on land, and stations that connect to earth stations. Countries also need to agree on rules for sending information to each other.
Sometimes, people talk about global networks of people, like groups of scientists, cities, or civil organizations working together to solve important problems around the world, known as global issues.
Satellite global networks
Communication satellites help connect people all over the world. Special groups of satellites, like Iridium, Globalstar, and Orbcomm, circle the Earth in a place called low Earth orbit. These satellites are arranged in patterns and work together in a mesh network, sharing information. With VSAT technology, people can get satellite internet access almost anywhere.
Mobile wireless networks
Most mobile phones use a standard called GSM. It works in more than 212 countries and territories. This makes it easy for people to use their phones when they travel to different countries. This feature is called international roaming. For this to work, mobile networks need to connect with each other through special agreements. This helps create a worldwide network.
Network interconnection
Global networks connect through different types of communication systems. For example, voice calls and internet data can travel together using technology like voice over IP (VoIP). Mobile phones can handle both calls and internet services. These networks also link up with satellite systems.
The main connections for these digital networks use special cables made of glass fibers, called fiber-optic cables. These cables can carry huge amounts of information across the world.
Social and economic impact
The Canadian sociologist Marshall McLuhan was the first to predict how global networks would change society, calling it the global village. His ideas talked about radio and television, which came before the internet.
Global networks have changed how people communicate many times. The electrical telegraph was a big change, sometimes called the Victorian Internet. Later, technologies like radiotelegraphy and telex made these networks bigger. Today, the Internet and mobile networks let people interact, organize, and talk to each other instantly, having a huge social impact. These networks have also changed how governments work around the world.
