Green Lantern

Green Lantern is the name of several superheroes in American comic books from DC Comics. These heroes fight evil with special rings that give them amazing powers. The powers come from imagination, bravery, and strong emotions.

The first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, was created in 1940. He used a magic ring to fight criminals in cities like Capitol City and Gotham City. Later, a new hero named Hal Jordan joined a team called the Green Lantern Corps.

Many new Green Lantern heroes have been introduced over the years. These include John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and Jo Mullein. These characters are popular and have appeared in TV shows, video games, and movies.

The first Green Lantern was created by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger. He appeared in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. This Green Lantern was named Alan Scott. He found a magic lantern after a train crash. The lantern gave him a magic ring that gave him powers. The ring needed to be charged every day and could not affect wood.

In 1959, a new version of Green Lantern was introduced named Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan’s powers came from an alien. Hal became part of the Green Lantern Corps, a team of space heroes.

The Green Lantern comic books have changed a lot over the years. They have introduced new characters and stories. Sometimes the books stopped and started again. The stories have won many awards.

Green Lantern Oath

In the comic book, the Green Lantern hero made a special promise. This promise is called the Green Lantern Oath. It reminds the hero of his duty. It goes like this:

In brightest day, in darkest night
No evil shall escape my sight!
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power ― Green Lantern's light!

These words have been used by different Green Lantern heroes.

Film

Standalone film

Hal Jordan appeared in a movie in 2011, played by Ryan Reynolds. The movie was supposed to start a new series of DC Comics films, but it didn’t do well. No more movies were made.

DC Extended Universe

John Stewart was planned to be in a scene in a movie directed by Zack Snyder, but the scene was changed to feature Martian Manhunter, played by Harry Lennix.

Television

In the live-action show Stargirl, Alan Scott’s power battery appears in a memory of when the Injustice Society attacked the Justice Society of America’s headquarters. A member named Pat Dugan hid the battery in his basement. In the second season, Alan Scott’s daughter Jennie-Lynn Scott finds and activates the battery. She then leaves Blue Valley to search for her missing brother Todd Rice.

DC Universe

A live-action Green Lantern TV show was planned for HBO Max and would feature Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz, along with a new character named Bree Jarta. Actors Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine were set to play Gardner and Scott. The show was to tell different stories set in various times. In October 2022, the show was changed to focus only on John Stewart. In December 2022, some reports said the show was cancelled, but James Gunn said it was still being made. In January 2023, the show’s title was announced as Lanterns. The version by Berlanti was cancelled, and the new show will focus on Stewart and Hal Jordan as part of DC Studios’ new DC Universe. In October 2024, Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre were chosen to play Jordan and Stewart. The show is set to air on HBO in 2026.

In academic and journalistic jargon

Some experts and writers use the term "Green Lanternism" to describe how people sometimes think leaders should be perfect or very powerful. They might blame leaders for problems that can’t be fixed, as if the leaders could solve everything just by trying hard enough, like the Green Lantern heroes.
