Grimsby, also known as Great Grimsby, is a port town in Lincolnshire, England. It sits near the mouth of the Humber River, which flows into the North Sea. The town is close to Cleethorpes, and together they form a larger area called a conurbation.

Grimsby was once very important for fishing. In the middle of the last century, it had the world's biggest fishing fleet. But changes like the Cod Wars and rules from the European Union, such as the Common Fisheries Policy, caused the fishing industry to shrink a lot. Since the 1990s, the town has grown in other areas, especially food production.

Today, Grimsby and Cleethorpes are a cultural and economic center for north and east Lincolnshire. The town has several notable landmarks, including Grimsby Minster, the Port of Grimsby, and the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre. People from Grimsby are often called Grimbarians. The town celebrates Great Grimsby Day on March 11, marking the day it received its town charter in 1201.

The town of Grimsby, also called Great Grimsby, is in Lincolnshire, England. It is near the Humber River. Grimsby is close to the town of Cleethorpes and some small villages. Many people live in this area.

History

There is archaeological evidence of a small town of Roman workers in the area in the 2nd century AD during Roman occupation. Located on The Haven, which flowed into the Humber, the site was a good place for ships to shelter from storms. It was also close to rich fishing grounds in the North Sea.

In the 9th century AD, Grimsby was settled by Danes. Local folklore says the name Grimsby comes from Grim, a Danish fisherman. The ending -by comes from the Old Norse word býr meaning village. Grimsby is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. It had about 200 people, a priest, a mill, and a ferry.

In the 12th century, Grimsby grew as a fishing and trading port. The town received its charter from King John in 1201. The first mayor was appointed in 1202. In the 15th century, The Haven began to fill up with mud. This stopped ships in the Humber from docking. Grimsby declined until the late 18th century.

In May 1796, the Grimsby Haven Company was formed to improve the Haven. After work to clear The Haven in the early 19th century, Grimsby grew quickly as the port became busier. In 1848, the railway arrived. This made it easier to move goods to and from the port. The first fish dock opened in Grimsby in 1856. The town became important for the fishing industry.

During the Second World War, the Royal Dock was a major base for minesweepers in the North Sea. After the war, the town faced changes in fishing rules and the economy. Grimsby's fishing history can be seen at the town's Fishing Heritage Centre.
