Hofgarten (Munich)

The Hofgarten (Court Garden) is a lovely garden in the center of Munich, Germany. It is between the big Residenz and the famous Englischer Garten. This quiet place is a nice spot for people to relax and enjoy nature in the middle of the city. The garden has an interesting history and gives people a calm break from the busy streets around it.

History

The Hofgarten was built between 1613 and 1617 by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria in the style of an Italian Renaissance garden. In the middle of the garden is a pretty pavilion for the goddess Diana, made in 1615. On top of the Diana pavilion is a copy of a statue of Bavaria, made in 1623. The real statue is kept inside the Residenz.

After World War II, the garden was damaged but was rebuilt. Today, the Hofgarten is open to everyone and is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. The closest subway stop is Odeonsplatz, just west of the garden.
