Early Life and Career
Ian David McShane, born on 29 September 1942, is an English actor known for many interesting roles on television and in movies.
Famous Roles
He played the title role in the BBC series Lovejoy from 1986 to 1994. He also portrayed Al Swearengen in Deadwood from 2004 to 2006, and later in a film continuation in 2019. For his work in Deadwood, he won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy Award.
In movies, McShane has taken on many different characters. Some of his famous roles include Teddy Bass in Sexy Beast, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda (2008) and its continuation in Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024), and Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He also plays Winston Scott in the John Wick movies, which began in 2014 and continue to today. His many roles have made him a well-loved actor around the world.
Early life
Ian McShane was born on 29 September 1942 in Blackburn, Lancashire. His father, Harry, was a professional footballer, and his mother was Irene McShane (née Cowley). Ian grew up in Davyhulme, Manchester, and went to Stretford Grammar School. He was part of the National Youth Theatre and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with famous actors like Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt. While still a student, he acted in his first film, The Wild and the Willing, in 1962. In 1963, he played the role of Satan in the York Mystery Plays.
Career
In the United Kingdom, McShane is famous for playing the antiques dealer Lovejoy in the eponymous series from 1986 to 1994. Before that, he was in many TV shows and films, such as Wuthering Heights in 1967, Jesus of Nazareth in 1977, and Battle of Britain in 1969.
McShane also did well in the United States, where he played Don Lockwood in Dallas and Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood. For Deadwood, he won a 2005 Golden Globe Award. He has had many other roles, including Captain Hook in Shrek the Third, Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda, and Mr. Bobinsky in Coraline. He has worked in many different kinds of shows and movies over the years.
Personal life
Ian McShane married English actress Suzan Farmer in 1965, but they divorced in 1968. Later that year, he married English model Ruth Post, and they had two children named Kate and Morgan. In 1977, he began a relationship with Sylvia Kristel, which ended his marriage to Post. In 1980, McShane married American actress Gwen Humble, and they still live in Venice, California today. He also has three grandchildren through his older daughter.
