Johann van Beethoven (c. 1739 or 1740 – 18 December 1792) was a German musician, teacher, and singer. He sang in the chapel of the Archbishop of Cologne, whose court was at Bonn. He is best known as the father of the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827).

Painting by Benedikt Beckenkamp, allegedly depicting Johann and Maria Magdalena van Beethoven. Whether the portrait is authentic or not is disputed, with Alexander Wheelock Thayer writing that it rests on "uncertain tradition" and it "lacks authoritative attestation".

Johann had a difficult later life. He passed away not long after Ludwig moved to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn.

Life

Johann van Beethoven was born around 1739 or 1740. He was a musician and singer who worked at the court of the Archbishop of Cologne in Bonn. He played several instruments, including the violin, zither, harpsichord, and clavichord.

Johann married Maria Magdalena Keverich in 1767. They had seven children, but only three lived to adulthood: Ludwig, Kaspar Anton Karl, and Nikolaus Johann. Ludwig van Beethoven grew up to be a famous composer. Johann recognized Ludwig's musical talent early on and taught him.

Johann passed away in 1792, the same year Ludwig moved to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn.

Ancestry

The name "van Beethoven" means "from Bettenhoven". Johann van Beethoven came from a mixed background. Only one side of his family was from the Duchy of Brabant. Most of his close family lived in the German-speaking Rhineland area and the Electorate of the Palatinate within the Holy Roman Empire.

Descendants

Johann van Beethoven had a famous son named Ludwig van Beethoven, who became a well-known composer. Ludwig never married and had no children.

Johann's second son, Karl, did have children. Sadly, none of Karl's descendants today carry the Beethoven name. The last one to carry the name, Karl Julius Maria van Beethoven, passed away in 1917.
