John Bennet Lawes

Sir John Bennet Lawes was an English scientist and businessman. He lived from 1814 to 1900. He wanted to help farmers grow better crops.

He started an experimental farm at his home called Rothamsted Manor. This farm later became known as Rothamsted Research.

One of Lawes’s big discoveries was a special plant food called superphosphate. This helped start the industry of chemical fertilizers. These are substances that help plants grow stronger and produce more food. His work changed agriculture around the world.

Lawes was recognized for his achievements. He was made a baronet, a special title. He was also a member of the Royal Society, a group of scientists in the United Kingdom. His farm became a place for important agricultural experiments. These helped scientists learn how to help the earth feed more people.

Life

John Bennet Lawes was born on December 28, 1814, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. He was the only son of John Bennet Lawes, who owned the Rothamsted estate. When John was eight, his father passed away, and he was raised mainly by his mother, Marianne. He attended Eton College and later Brasenose College, Oxford, but he did not graduate.

While at Oxford, John started experimenting with growing plants and finding ways to help them grow better. He wanted to help farmers grow crops without needing animals for fertilizer. In 1842, he made a new kind of plant food by mixing phosphates with sulphuric acid, which began the artificial plant food industry. He worked with Joseph Henry Gilbert for over fifty years, and together they made Rothamsted famous for their important farming science work. John received several honors during his life. He passed away on August 31, 1900.

Legacy

In 1889, Lawes gave money to help the Rothamsted experimental farm keep running. This started The Lawes Agricultural Trust. Today, Rothamsted Experimental Station is the oldest farm research place in the world.

A school in Harpenden, named Sir John Lawes School, honors him. There is also a place in Australia called Lawes, Queensland, where the University of Queensland Gatton Campus studies farming.
