Joypolis

Joypolis (Japanese: ジョイポリス) is a chain of indoor amusement parks created by Sega and run by CA Sega Joypolis. It started on July 20, 1994, with its first park in Yokohama, Japan. Since then, Joypolis parks have opened in many cities in Japan and China. These parks feature fun arcade games and exciting rides based on Sega's intellectual properties, special themes, and popular characters.

There have been eleven Joypolis theme parks in total, but as of 2024, only four are still open. Two are in Japan, in Tokyo and a Sports Center in Sendai, and two are in China, in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Many parks closed because not enough people visited and costs got too high.

In 2016, Sega announced that a company called China Animations would buy a big part of Sega Live Creation (now CA Sega Joypolis) for 600 million yen, starting in January 2017. Today, the two open Joypolis parks are not fully controlled by Sega, but they still use Sega's games, branding, and characters thanks to a licensing agreement.

Japan

Tokyo

The main Joypolis park is in the Odaiba area of Tokyo. It first opened on July 12, 1996, and it is the only Joypolis park in Japan that is still open. It has been updated twice, once in December 2000 and again in early 2012.

Sendai (Joypolis Sports)

In January 2022, a new type of Joypolis called Joypolis Sports was announced. This is a sports center in Izumi-ku, Sendai that will include sports activities and a few small arcade games. It was supposed to open on March 18, but was delayed because of an earthquake. It finally opened on April 29.

China

Shanghai

The first Joypolis park in China opened in the Changning District of Shanghai in two steps: the first part opened in December 2014, and the second part opened in February 2016.

Guangzhou

In January 2021, it was announced that a Joypolis park would open in Guangzhou later that year. It opened on May 9, 2022, and it will have 40 different attractions. It is the first Joypolis park to open in South China.

Closed

Yokohama

The very first Joypolis park opened in Yokohama on July 20, 1994. It closed permanently on February 28, 2001, and the building was later torn down to make space for apartments.

Niigata

The second Joypolis park opened in Chūō-ku, Niigata City on December 9, 1995. It closed permanently on January 16, 2001, after problems with management.

Fukuoka

A Joypolis park opened in Fukuoka on April 20, 1996. It closed on September 24, 2001, because of changes at Sega. Part of the space became a restaurant, and the other part became a smaller arcade.

Shinjuku

A Joypolis park opened in Shinjuku on October 4, 1996. It closed permanently on August 22, 2000, because the new Tokyo Joypolis was more popular.

Kyoto

A Joypolis park opened in Kyoto on September 11, 1997. It closed on August 22, 2002, because it was not making enough money. The space is now used for selling souvenirs.

Okayama

A Joypolis park opened in Yokohama on July 18, 1998. It closed on September 2, 2018, because the building was going to be torn down for redevelopment.

Umeda

A Joypolis park opened in Umeda, Osaka on November 28, 1998. It closed on May 6, 2018, when its lease ended. Later, a VR Zone opened in the same space.

VR Shibuya

Around October 2018, a Joypolis-branded place opened in Shibuya that focused on virtual reality games. It closed on June 30, 2020.

Qingdao

A Joypolis park opened in Qingdao in July 2015. It closed on May 31, 2023.

Joypolis attractions

Tokyo Joypolis

Tokyo Joypolis has many fun places to explore. There is a store called JP Store where you can buy items with Sega designs. The park has a main stage for events and a smaller stage called Multi Stage in Frame Cafe. You can play games at the Prizes Corner, which has special prizes. There is a section called Sonic Carnival with games for younger visitors that feature Sonic and his friends. Space Interaction blends digital games with real-life fun.

The park also has several places to eat. Crepe Store sells crepes, and Dippin' Dots Ice Cream sells frozen treats. Frame Cafe offers great views of Tokyo. D-Lounge is a place to relax with snacks and drinks.

Qingdao Joypolis

Qingdao Joypolis has many exciting attractions. You can look for animals in a 3D world at Animal Treasure Box, or see pictures at Beautiful Test. Chuang Jurassic is a 3D movie experience. Fortune Forest tells stories about what the future might hold. GO GO Jockey! lets you ride a plastic horse in an arcade game.

There is a haunted house attraction called Horror House. Initial D Arcade Stage 4 Limited lets you drive real cars in a racing game based on a popular comic. Sonic Athletics is a racing game with Sonic the Hedgehog on a treadmill. You can test your Sonic trivia knowledge at Sonic Brain Ranking, or enjoy a 4D ride with Sonic Jumping Tour. Sonic Star Race is a bumper-car ride with Sonic, and Sonic Tropical Resort is a hot-air-balloon ride. Spy Mission is a jungle-themed hang glider simulator. The First Scene is a virtual reality ride in a chair. Transformers: Human Alliance Special is a ride based on a popular arcade game. There are many other virtual reality games.

Other fun spots include Balloon Walker, a game of luck, and Clown Cannon, a Skee-Ball game. Sea Fishing is a fishing simulator, and there is a stage area. Thunder MT is a place for a special arcade game, and UFO Catchers is an area for prize-winning games. D-Lounge is a place to relax with snacks and drinks.

Joypolis Sports

Joypolis Sports offers many activities to try, such as inline skating, roller skating, skateboarding, and casterboarding. You can play Struck 9 Pitching Game, Igoball, or visit the Comic Corner, E-Sports Corner, and Party game Corner. There are also games like darts, karaoke, billiards, boccia, mökky, cue sports, table tennis, trampolining, bouldering, foot darts, archery, futsal, bubble football, badminton, volleyball, teqball, basketball, and virtual versions of soccer, mixrun, and tennis. There is also an Amusement Game Corner for more fun games.
