King Lear

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

An 1854 painting showing King Lear with his loyal daughter Cordelia, illustrating a dramatic moment from Shakespeare's play.

The Tragedy of King Lear, often shortened to King Lear, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1605 or 1606. It is set in pre-Roman Britain and tells the story of King Lear, who decides to share his power and land with his daughters. This decision leads to many sad events in the play.

The play is known for its deep feelings, beautiful poetry, and important ideas about blindness, madness, and what it means to be human (human nature). The first known performance was on Saint Stephen's Day in 1606.

Over time, different versions of the play were printed, including one in 1608 and another in 1623 called the First Folio. In 1681, a new version with a happier ending was made by Nahum Tate, and this version was performed more often than Shakespeare's original for many years. But since 1838, people have come to see Shakespeare's original play as one of his best works. Even a famous writer named Percy Bysshe Shelley praised it highly in 1821.

Plot

The play begins with King Lear deciding to give away parts of his kingdom to his three daughters, depending on how much they love him. Two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, say they love him a lot, but the youngest, Cordelia, says she loves him only as much as a daughter should. Lear is angry at Cordelia and cuts her out of his plans, giving her share to Goneril and Regan.

Lear decides to live with Goneril and Regan and keeps a group of 100 knights. Goneril tells him to cut the number in half, and Lear becomes very angry. He fears he might be going mad and leaves for Regan’s home. Meanwhile, Edmund, the son of the Earl of Gloucester who was born outside of marriage, plans to trick his brother Edgar and take his place. Edgar runs away and pretends to be a mad beggar.

Lear ends up lost in a storm and goes mad. His daughter Cordelia and a French army come to help him, but there is a battle. Lear and Cordelia are captured. In the end, many characters face sad fates, and Lear dies of grief over Cordelia.
