Kulig

Kulig is a Polish winter tradition that began in the 16th century. It was a special kind of sleigh ride party for young people, especially those from rich families. These parties happened during the Carnival season, between Christmas and Ash Wednesday.

During a kulig, horse-pulled sleighs and sleds would travel from one big house to another. At each stop, there would be a big meal with foods like babka, chrusty, and sausages, followed by dancing. Sometimes, these sleigh rides could last up to twelve days! The adventure would start when a curled stick, called a "crutch," was given out to the participants as a signal to gather.

Today, kulig rides are still enjoyed, mixing old traditions with new fun. They are now sold as a tourist attraction in the beautiful Tatra mountains, especially in places like Zakopane.
