Kuskokwim 300

The Kuskokwim 300 is a popular mid-distance dogsled race in Alaska. Each year, it brings together some of the best mushers in the sport. The race starts and finishes on the Kuskokwim River in Bethel, Alaska.
Riders race on and near the river that gives the event its name, the Kuskokwim River. This race is important for people who love dogsled racing because it tests the skill of the mushers and the endurance of their dogs over a long distance.
History
The Kuskokwim 300, also called the "Kusko 300" or "K-300", has been held every January since 1980, except in 2021 when it was held in February. The race remembers an old mail route that linked villages along the river to the rest of the world. Many top mushers and hundreds of sled dogs take part each year for a big prize of $160,000, the largest prize for a 300-mile sled dog race.
The race is known for its hard weather and trail conditions. The first race had very cold blizzard conditions for the first half, then suddenly turned warm with rain for the second half. Some years, like 1991, 1999, and 2008, were so wet and windy that they were called "Kusko-Swim" because of the deep water on the ice. In 2021, the race was moved to February to avoid Super Bowl LV.
