Toponymy
The name "La Condamine" comes from an old Latin word for a special piece of land. In the Middle Ages, this land was near a castle. It belonged either to a ruler who didn't have to pay taxes or to two rulers at the same time.
History
La Condamine has been an important part of Monaco since 1911. That year, the country was divided into three areas. In 1918, these three areas were joined back together.
Legends
There is an old story about Saint Devote, who lived in the 3rd century. The story says that after she died in Corsica, a storm stopped her boat from reaching Africa. A dove led the boat to Monaco instead. Later, her relics were stolen. Today, people remember this story each year on January 26. They have a special ceremony where a boat is burned in front of a church, followed by a big procession the next day.
Geography
The district of La Condamine is in a small valley. There used to be a railway viaduct, but now trains go through a tunnel. The old railway path is now a road that connects the district to Monte Carlo.
Overview
Condamine is a historic area of Monaco that goes back to the Middle Ages. Its name means cultivable land. It is the second oldest part of Monaco, after Monaco-Ville. It is located between Monaco-Ville and Monte Carlo, making it easy to visit both places. In the early 1900s, travel writers suggested its hotels as a more affordable place to stay compared to Monte Carlo, while still being close to the "old city" of Monaco-Ville, which does not have hotels. In the late 1800s, the official archivist Gustave Saige described it as the end of the "small semicircular" Port Hercule, sloping down towards it.
Education
La Condamine is part of Monaco and has several schools for students. Some schools are the École de la Condamine, École des Révoires, and the International School of Monaco. There are also special schools like the Regency School of Languages and the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier, which focuses on hotel and technical training. There is also the Académie Rainier III Musique et Théâtre for music and theater.
