LeBron James

LeBron Raymone James, born December 30, 1984, is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is known as "King James." He is the NBA's top scorer of all time and has won four NBA championships.

James has won many awards, including four NBA MVP awards and the Rookie of the Year award. He has played in the NBA Finals ten times and been an All-Star 22 times.

Born in Akron, Ohio, James became famous in high school and was chosen first in the 2003 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has played for several teams and has won championships with each one.

Off the court, James has become very successful. He has earned a lot of money and has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time many times.

Early life

LeBron Raymone James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. His mom, Gloria Marie James, was only 16 when he was born. His dad was not part of his life. LeBron's childhood was difficult, and his family often moved to different homes in Akron.

When LeBron was nine, a coach named Frank Walker introduced him to basketball. LeBron started playing organized basketball in fifth grade and later joined a team called the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars. He and his friends, Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, and Willie McGee, called themselves the "Fab Four" and all went to St. Vincent–St. Mary High School.

High school career

Basketball

LeBron James started playing basketball in high school and became very good quickly. In his first year, he scored 18 points on average per game and helped his team, St. Vincent–St. Mary, win the state championship without losing a game.

By his second year, he was scoring 25 points per game and led his team to the state title again.

Before his junior year, LeBron was featured in a magazine and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, making him very famous. That year, he scored 29 points per game on average and was named the best player in Ohio and the country. His team didn’t win the state championship that year.

In his final year of high school, LeBron played against top teams and scored even more points—31 per game. He won many awards and played in big all-star games. LeBron helped his team win the state championship.

Football

Besides basketball, LeBron also played football in high school as a wide receiver. He was good enough that college teams noticed him. He helped his team reach the state semifinals in his third year but didn’t play his final year because of an injury.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2003–2010)

2003–2004: Rookie of the Year

The Cleveland Cavaliers chose LeBron James as the first player in the 2003 NBA draft. He wore jersey number 23 to honor Michael Jordan. In his first game, James scored 25 points, setting a record for the most points by a new player in their first game. By the end of the 2003–04 season, James became the first Cavalier to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

2004–2008: Rise to superstardom

In the 2004–05 season, James was selected for the NBA All-Star Game for the first time. Teams noticed his quick improvement, and he set a new record for points in a single game for the Cavaliers. He signed a big contract to stay with the team. James helped the Cavaliers reach the playoffs for the first time in many years. They won some games but lost in the later rounds.

James decided to leave the Cavaliers and join the Miami Heat in 2010. Many people were upset about his decision, which he announced on a special TV show. He joined two other star players, and some fans and other players were not happy about this. James said he wanted to have a better chance to win a championship with the Heat.

2010–2011: Year of media and fan scrutiny

James signed a big contract with the Heat and changed his jersey number to 6. The team had high hopes, but many people outside Miami were not happy with him. The Heat had a slow start but finished the season strong. They reached the NBA Finals but lost to the Dallas Mavericks. James did not play as well as usual in the Finals.

2018–2019: Injury and playoff miss

James joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. The team had a slow start but improved. James got injured and missed many games, and the Lakers did not make the playoffs.

2019–2020: Fourth NBA championship

The Lakers made some changes and started the 2019–20 season very well. James helped the team reach the Finals, where they faced the Miami Heat. The Lakers won the championship, and James was named Finals MVP for the fourth time.

2020–2021: Back-to-back chase

James missed the start of the 2025–26 season due to injury but made his debut later. He became the first player to play in 23 NBA seasons and continued to achieve impressive milestones.

National team career

LeBron James first joined the United States national team when he was 19 years old at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. He didn’t play much then, and the team won a bronze medal. This was the first time the U.S. team didn’t win gold since NBA players started joining the Olympics.
