List of things named after Archimedes
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Archimedes was an ancient Greek scientist who lived around 287 BC to 212 BC. He made many important discoveries in math, physics, and engineering. Because of his clever ideas, many things today are named after him.
Some of these include machines and principles that help us understand the world. For example, there's the Archimedes' principle, which explains how objects float in water. There are also tools and inventions, like the Archimedean screw, used to move water from low to high places.
Being named after Archimedes means that these ideas and inventions are important and still used today. They show how his genius continues to influence science and technology even thousands of years later.
Mathematical concepts
Many important ideas in math are named after Archimedes. These include shapes like the Archimedean spiral and Archimedean solid. There are also concepts such as the Archimedean property and Archimedes' axiom. Interesting problems and formulas linked to him include Archimedes' cattle problem and the Heron–Archimedes formula.
Physical concepts
Archimedes has two important ideas in physics named after him. Archimedes paradox and Archimedes' principle help us understand how things act in water and other liquids.
Technology
Archimedes created many important inventions that we still remember today. Some of his most famous creations are the Archimedes' pulley for lifting heavy objects and the Archimedes' screw for moving water. Other ideas named after him include the Archimedes' heat ray and the Claw of Archimedes.
Many modern things also carry Archimedes' name. There is the Archimedes bridge, a special type of Archimede combined cycle power plant, and a ship named the SS Archimedes. In computers, we have tools like Archimedes (CAD) and an old computer called the Acorn Archimedes.
Oath
Some engineers take an oath called the Archimedean Oath to honor Archimedes. The oath helps them remember to work with honesty and integrity in their jobs.
Astronomical names
Some places in space are named after Archimedes. There is an asteroid called 3600 Archimedes. There is a crater on the Moon named Archimedes (crater). There is also a mountain range on the Moon called Montes Archimedes. These names celebrate Archimedes for his important work in science and math.
Written works of Archimedes
Archimedes wrote many important books that have lasted through time. One famous example is the Archimedes Palimpsest. It is the only book that has "Archimedes" in its name. His writings show his clever ideas about math and science.
Other
Archimedes has inspired names in stories, science, and websites. In T. H. White's novel The Sword in the Stone, Merlin's owl is named Archimedes. There is also a type of bryozoan called Archimedes (bryozoan), a website named Archimedes-lab.org, and a term called Pseudo-Archimedes.
