The Lochkovian was an important time during the early part of the Devonian Epoch, which happened a very long time ago. It began around 419.62 million years ago and lasted until about 413.02 million years ago. This time marked the start of the whole Devonian Period, when life on Earth was changing and growing in many interesting ways.
The Lochkovian got its name from a small village called Lochkov in the Czech Republic, which is now part of the big city of Prague. Scientists chose this name because they found important rock layers there that help them understand what the world was like during this ancient time.
After the Lochkovian came another stage called the Pragian. In places like North America, scientists sometimes use different names such as Gedinnian or Helderbergian to talk about the same time period. Studying the Lochkovian helps us learn about how plants, animals, and the Earth itself were developing millions of years ago.
