M16 rifle

The M16 rifle is a modern firearm used by the United States military. It was developed from an earlier design called the ArmaLite AR-15 and became important for soldiers. The M16 shoots special bullets called 5.56mm rounds and can hold 20 bullets in a container called a magazine.
The M16 was first used by the U.S. military in 1964 and became useful during the Vietnam War. Over time, the design was improved with new features. Different versions were made to make the rifle better for soldiers.
Many countries use the M16 because it is strong and reliable. Millions of these rifles have been made. Today, the U.S. military often uses a shorter version called the M4 carbine, but the M16 is still important in history. In 2022, the U.S. Army chose a new rifle called the SIG MCX SPEAR to replace the M16 and M4 in the future, known as the M7.
History
The M16 rifle is a type of automatic rifle that came from an earlier design called the AR-15. In 1964, it was named the M16 and used by U.S. soldiers, especially in the Vietnam War.
The M16 was lighter and easier for soldiers to carry than older rifles. It used smaller bullets, so soldiers could carry more ammunition. It had some early problems, like getting stuck if it was dirty, but these were fixed. After that, the M16 became very popular and widely used.
Reliability
The M16 rifle had some problems when it was first used. It sometimes didn’t work well, especially in tough places like the jungles of Vietnam. This happened because soldiers didn’t always have the right tools to clean it, and the rifle needed a lot of care to work properly.
Later versions, like the M16A1, worked much better. Soldiers in Vietnam were happy with the M16 after these fixes. In newer tests, soldiers said the M16 worked well, even in hard places.
Design
The M16 is a lightweight rifle that uses 5.56 mm bullets. It is air-cooled and has a system to help control the gun’s movement when firing. The rifle’s parts are made from strong materials like aluminum and steel.
The M16 was made to be lighter than older rifles, so soldiers could carry it more easily. Changes were made over time to improve it, like adding a thicker barrel for better heat and durability. The rifle can be used with different attachments, like a device for launching small grenades.
NATO standards
In March 1970, the United States suggested that all NATO forces use the 5.56×45mm cartridge. This was a big change from older gun sizes. By the mid-1970s, other armies started looking at M16-style guns. NATO began testing different rounds in 1977. The U.S. offered the 5.56×45mm M193 round, but there were worries about it working well against new body armor. Finally, in October 1980, NATO chose the Belgian 5.56×45mm SS109 round (STANAG 4172). This round had a stronger, heavier bullet that could hit farther.
All current M16 type rifles can shoot special 22 mm rifle grenades from their flash hiders without needing an extra part. These grenades can be for different purposes. Some need a blank cartridge to work, while others can use regular bullets.
M16 rifles can also hold special mounts called NATO Accessory Rail or Picatinny rail to hold things like scopes, lights, lasers, and night vision. The M16 is used by many countries around the world.

M16
This was the first M16 version used by the U.S. Air Force. It had special parts for night vision, a special trigger, and other unique features. The Air Force used these until around 2001.
The M16 was also used by the British SAS during the Falklands War.
XM16E1 and M16A1 (Colt Model 603)

The U.S. Army XM16E1 was like the M16 but added a special part to help load the magazine. The M16A1 was the final version made from 1967 to 1982. It had improvements to make it more reliable and easier to use. The M16A1 was used for training until the early 2000s but is no longer used by the U.S. Army, though some other countries still use it.
M16A2

The M16A2 was developed for the United States Marine Corps after experiences in Vietnam. It was officially adopted in 1983. The Marines were the first to use it, followed by the United States Army in 1986.
The M16A2 had many changes. It could fire three-round bursts instead of fully automatic. The barrel was thicker to prevent bending. The rear sight could be adjusted for different distances. The handguard was changed to a round shape for better fit. The buttstock was made stronger and longer.
The U.S. Army and Marines have since moved to newer models, but some M16A2s are still used by the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard.
M16A3
The M16A3 is a version of the M16A2 used by the U.S. Navy SEALs, Seabees, and some other units. It can fire fully automatic like the older M16A1. It looks almost the same as the M16A2 but has different internal parts.
M16A4
The M16A4 was adopted in 1997. It has a special handle for adding sights and other tools. The Marines used it until 2015 when they switched to a smaller rifle called the M4 carbine. Some M16A4s are still used by support Marines.

Colt Commando (XM177 & GAU-5)

In Vietnam, some soldiers used a shorter version of the M16 called the XM177. It had a shorter barrel and a folding metal stock, so it was lighter and easier to carry. It also had a special part to reduce flashes and loud noises when firing. The Air Force’s GAU-5/A and the Army’s XM177E1 versions were slightly different, with the Army version having an extra part for loading. These weapons were used by special forces, helicopter crews, and other troops who needed a smaller rifle.
M4 carbine

The M4 carbine came from earlier designs, starting with trials in 1984. It became the official rifle in 1991 and replaced older weapons in 1994. It was used in conflicts in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The M4 carbine can fire in short bursts, while the M4A1 carbine can fire continuously. Both have a rail for adding different sights.
M4 Commando

Colt made a version called the Model 733, similar to the older XM177E2 but with a simpler flash hider. Over time, different parts were used, so each rifle could look a bit different.
M5 carbine
The M5 carbine is an improved version of the M4 carbine. It has a lower receiver that works from either side, a low gas block, and a floating rail. It comes in several barrel lengths and versions, including ones that use different types of ammunition.
Diemaco C7 and C8

The C7 and C8 rifles were developed for the Canadian Armed Forces by Diemaco, now Colt Canada. The C7 can fire in semi-automatic or automatic mode and has extra strength and better handles compared to earlier M16s. The C8 is the shorter carbine version of the C7. These rifles are also used by armed forces in Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the British SAS.
Mk 4 Mod 0
The Mk 4 Mod 0 was a special version of the M16A1 made for U.S. Navy SEALs during the Vietnam War. It was changed to work better in water and had a part to reduce noise. It could be taken underwater up to 200 feet without getting damaged.
Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle

The Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle was made to give soldiers better range when acting as marksmen. It has a long barrel and can fire special bullets that can hit targets more than 600 meters away.
M231 Firing Port Weapon (FPW)
The M231 Firing Port Weapon is a smaller version of the M16 made to fire from small openings in the M2 Bradley vehicle. Normal M16 rifles were too long for this use, so this shorter version was created.
Colt Model 655 and 656 "Sniper" variants
Colt made two special versions of the M16 during the Vietnam War for possible use as sniper rifles. Both had heavier barrels and special sights for better accuracy.
Mekut'zrar
Israel received many M16A1 rifles from the United States. Some of these were shortened for better use in cities, vehicles, and policing.

- The Chinese Norinco CQ is a version of the M16A1 made for export.
- The ARMADA rifle and TRAILBLAZER carbine are copies of the Norinco CQ made in the Republic of the Philippines.
- The S-5.56 rifle is a copy made in Iran, with two versions using different types of bullets.
- The KH-2002 is an Iranian version of the S-5.56, redesigned to be carried more easily.
- The Terab rifle is a copy of the Iranian S-5.56 made in Sudan.
- The M16S1 is a version of the M16A1 made in Singapore. It has been replaced by the SAR 21 since 1999.
- M16A1 rifles were once made in the Philippines.
- The Marine Scout Sniper Rifle is a sniper rifle used by the Philippine Marine Corps.
- The Special Operations Assault Rifle (SOAR) is a carbine based on the M16, used by the Philippine National Police.
- Taiwan uses M16-based rifles as their standard weapons, including the T65, T86, and T91.
- Ukraine plans to make an accurized version of the M4 called the M16 WAC47.
- New Zealand will start using the MARS-L rifle in 2017, an upgraded version of the M16 system.
Production and users
The M16 is one of the most made rifles in the world that uses 5.56×45mm bullets. Right now, 15 NATO countries and over 80 countries use the M16. Companies in the United States, Canada, and China have made more than 8,000,000 of these rifles. About 90% of them are still being used. The M16 took the place of the M14 rifle and M2 carbine as the main rifle for the U.S. military. The M14 is still used sometimes, mainly for special jobs.

Conflicts
The M16 rifle was used in many conflicts and wars around the world.
In the 1960s, it was used in the Vietnam War and other battles such as the Laotian Civil War, Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and the Dominican Civil War. It continued to be used in the late 1960s during The Troubles in Northern Ireland and in several other conflicts in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The rifle remained in service through the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, seeing action in places like the Yom Kippur War, Lebanese Civil War, Soviet–Afghan War, Gulf War, and the Yugoslav Wars.
In the 2000s and beyond, the M16 was used in the War in Afghanistan (2001–2021), Iraq War, and many other recent conflicts including the Syrian civil war, Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the ongoing Sudanese civil war (2023–present).
