Luís Carlos Martins Pena was a Brazilian writer. He was born on November 5, 1815, and died on December 7, 1848.

He is famous for bringing a special kind of play called "comedy of manners" to Brazil. These plays show how people act in everyday life, often with humor.

Because of his important work, Martins Pena was called "the Brazilian Molière." Molière was a well-known French playwright. Today, Martins Pena is honored as the patron of the 29th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. This group celebrates great writers in Brazil. His plays helped shape Brazilian theater and are still studied and performed today.

Life

Martins Pena was born in Rio de Janeiro. He lost both his parents when he was young. He studied art and music at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes. Later, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and traveled to many countries, including England. While he was in England, he became ill and passed away in Lisbon in 1848.

Works

Luís Carlos Martins Pena wrote many funny plays. Some of his well-known works include O Juiz de Paz na Roça from 1838, Itaminda, ou O Guerreiro de Tupã from 1839, and A Família e a Festa na Roça from 1840. He also wrote Vitiza, ou O Nero de Espanha in 1841 and O Judas no Sábado de Aleluia in 1844, among others. Some of his plays were published after he passed away, like O Noviço in 1853 and Os Dois e o Inglês Maquinista in 1871.
