The name honors Elio Massoia, an Argentine scientist who helped discover more about South American animals. He was one of the first to see that these opossums were different from others in the Yungas area.

Distribution

The Massoia's lutrine opossum lives in parts of south-central Bolivia and northern Argentina. In Argentina, it is mainly found in the Yungas region, east of the Andes mountains. It likes lowland savanna grasslands with dense plants and areas near water.

Description
