Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was a special racing car from the 1950s. It raced in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship. People called it the "SL-R," short for "sport, light, racing." It was based on another racing car, the W 196 R, but had a bigger engine.

The 300 SLR had a strong 3-litre engine with 302 horsepower. It had two seats and headlights, so it could race on public roads. Famous racer Stirling Moss called it one of the greatest sports racing cars ever.

Only nine of these cars were made. Two were special closed cars called the "Uhlenhaut Coupé." They looked like normal cars but were built for racing. After a big accident stopped Mercedes-Benz from racing, these cars were hidden away. One became a personal car for a Mercedes engineer and was the fastest road car in the world at the time.

In 2022, one of these rare cars sold for €135 million, making it the most expensive car to ever be sold. The sale happened at an auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

History

Name

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was not related to the 1952 W194 Le Mans racer or the 1954 300SL Gullwing road car. It was based on the successful 2.5-litre straight-eight-powered 1954–1955 Mercedes-Benz W196 Formula One car. Engineers made the engine bigger, up to 3.0 litres, for racing. They called it "SL-R" for Sport Leicht-Rennen (meaning Sport Light-Racing).

In the 1955 World Sportscar Championship, Mercedes skipped some early races but still competed in others. Juan Manuel Fangio, driving for Mercedes, won the 1955 Argentine Grand Prix. Later, Stirling Moss won the 1955 Mille Miglia in a 300 SLR, setting a very fast record time.

Sadly, a big accident happened during the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans. After this, Mercedes stopped racing for a while.

The 300 SLR did well in other races, winning several events and helping Mercedes win the championship that year.

Uhlenhaut Coupé

Mercedes made two special road versions of the 300 SLR called Uhlenhaut Coupé. These cars were very fast, with one said to be the fastest road car of its time. One of these cars was kept by Mercedes and shown in its museum in Bad Cannstatt. The other was sold for a huge amount of money in 2022.

Technical description

The 300 SLR was a special racing car. Its engine was placed just behind the front wheels to balance the weight better. It had a light body made from a special metal, which helped it stay light and fast.

Its engine was powerful and used regular fuel. The car had special brakes and suspension for high speeds, and it also had a large rear spoiler to help slow it down during races.
