Moers

Moers is a German city next to the Rhine River, near the city of Duisburg. It is in the Wesel district. The city has a long history and is known for its pretty area and culture. Many people have lived there for a very long time, and Moers remains important today.

History

Moers was first known in the year 1186 as an independent area within the Holy Roman Empire. During a big war called the Eighty Years' War, soldiers from Spain and the Netherlands took control of it at different times.

Later, after a leader named William III of Orange died in 1702, Moers became part of Prussia. Then, in 1795, France took it over. After a big meeting in 1815, it went back to Prussia and later became part of the German Empire in 1871. During World War II, a coal mine in Moers that made oil was targeted and partly taken apart after the war.

In 1985, a volleyball team called the Moers Sports Club was created. They won the top championship in 1989.
