The Monte Carlo Casino, officially named Casino de Monte-Carlo, is a famous place for games and fun in Monaco. It is more than just a casino; it also has a beautiful theater called the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and offices for a dance group known as Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.
This special place is owned and run by a company called the Société des Bains de Mer. The government of Monaco and the royal family have most of the shares in this company. They also own many hotels, sports clubs, restaurants, and night clubs in the country.
One interesting rule is that people who live in Monaco, called Monégasques, are not allowed to gamble or work in the casino’s gaming rooms. This rule was created a long time ago by Princess Caroline, who was in charge of Monaco at the time. She changed the rules because she thought it wasn’t right for locals to gamble or work there.
History
The idea of opening a gambling casino in Monaco began with Princess Caroline. She wanted to help her family's money problems. Her son, future Prince Charles, worked with others to make plans for a spa, a casino, and homes for visitors. The first casino opened in 1856 in a small building.
Over time, the casino moved and grew. In 1863, a man named François Blanc took over and helped build a bigger, more beautiful casino. The area was renamed Monte Carlo in honor of the prince. The casino was expanded many times and became a famous place to visit. It helped support Monaco's economy for many years.
Facilities
The Monte Carlo Casino has two main buildings. The main casino is called Casino de Monte-Carlo. It has special rooms with different rules and dress codes. The other building is Casino Café de Paris. It has simpler games and lower prices.
Games in the regular rooms are open from 2:00 PM to 1:00 AM every day. The rules get stricter after 7:00 PM.
You can play many games here, such as different kinds of roulette, Texas Hold'em poker, Blackjack, Trente et Quarante, Craps, Baccarat, Video poker, and Slot machines.
1913 gambler's fallacy
In the summer of 1913, something strange happened at the Casino de Monte-Carlo. During a game of roulette, the ball landed on the color black 26 times in a row. This was very rare. Many people lost money because they thought the wheel would soon show red after so many black numbers. They were wrong, because each spin of the wheel is random and independent.
Breaking the bank
In 1873, a man named Joseph Jagger noticed a problem with one of the roulette wheels at the Monte Carlo Casino and used it to win a lot of money. This story became famous in a song called "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" from 1892.
Later, some players from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tried a similar plan using a special team. Their story was told in a book called Busting Vegas.
Other mentions
Some computer methods help solve hard math problems and are called Monte Carlo methods. They were named after the Casino de Monte-Carlo by a scientist named Nicholas Metropolis. There is also a special math tool called CASINO. A part of the race track in the Monaco Grand Prix is named Casino, and it is part of the Circuit de Monaco.
