Mussau Island is the biggest island in the St Matthias Islands, which are part of Papua New Guinea. It lies in the New Ireland Province and is famous for its many plants and animals. The island is mostly covered by thick, old rainforest that climbs up hills.

Mussau has many special plants that grow only there, with over 243 types found nowhere else on Earth. The island is also home to at least 47 different kinds of butterflies that live naturally there. This makes Mussau a special place for scientists who study nature and for anyone who enjoys exploring beautiful, wild areas.
