Negative refraction
In optics, negative refraction is a special thing that happens with light rays. Usually, when light goes from one material to another, it bends in one direction. But with negative refraction, it bends the other way. This happens because of a special kind of material called a metamaterial.
Metamaterials are made in a very exact way. They have properties that normal materials do not have. For negative refraction to happen, the metamaterial needs to have a negative value for electric permittivity (ε) and magnetic permeability (μ). When this occurs, the material can have a negative refractive index.
This phenomenon happens at the place where two different materials meet. One material has a normal, positive phase velocity, meaning its light waves move in the usual way. The other material has a negative phase velocity, which is unusual. This difference makes the light bend in the opposite direction, creating the effect called negative refraction.
Negative phase velocity
Negative phase velocity (NPV) is a special way that light travels in some materials. Normally, light acts in predictable ways when it moves from one material to another, but NPV is different. It was first described by a scientist named Victor Veselago.
One way to understand NPV is by looking at two important parts of light behavior: the wave vector, which shows the direction of the light waves, and the Poynting vector, which shows the direction of energy flow. In NPV, these two point in opposite directions. This unusual behavior can happen in special materials made with certain properties. Scientists have studied and seen this effect in experiments since 2009.
Refraction
When light enters a special kind of material, it bends in a way that is opposite to what usually happens. Instead of bending to one side of an imaginary line, it bends to the same side. This special bending is called negative refraction. When this bending happens without any reflection, it is known as total refraction.
