The Pacific plate is an oceanic tectonic plate that lies beneath the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest tectonic plate on Earth, covering 103 million km2 (40 million sq mi). This huge piece of the Earth's crust moves very slowly, shaping the ocean floor.

The Pacific plate and other principal plates of Earth's lithosphere

The plate began as a small piece of land 190 million years ago, where three other plates met. Over time, it grew to cover most of the Pacific Ocean. This growth moved other plates and left only small pieces of some behind.

One special feature of the Pacific plate is a hot spot deep inside it. This hot spot created the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Hot spots are places where hot material from deep within the Earth rises to form islands and other landforms.

Boundaries

The Pacific plate touches many other plates and forms different kinds of boundaries with them. On its north-eastern side, it meets the Explorer plate, the Juan de Fuca plate, and the Gorda plate, creating ridges like the Explorer Ridge, the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and the Gorda Ridge.

In the middle of the eastern side, it has a special kind of boundary called a transform boundary with the North American plate along the San Andreas Fault. It also meets the Cocos plate and the Nazca plate, forming more ridges.

On the southern side, the Pacific plate meets the Antarctic plate and forms a ridge called the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge. The western side touches plates like the Okhotsk plate, the Philippine Sea plate, and the Caroline plate, creating trenches and other boundaries. In the south-west, it interacts with the Indo-Australian plate, forming trenches like the Tonga Trench and the Kermadec Trench. The northern side meets the North American plate again, forming the Aleutian Trench and the Aleutian Islands.

The Pacific plate began forming when the triple junction at the center of Panthalassa destabilized about 190 million years ago.

The Pacific plate is mostly made of the ocean floor. It also includes parts of land in New Zealand, Baja California, and coastal California.
