Paibi

Paibi is a small village in China, located in Hunan Province. This village is important for scientists who study Earth's history. It has a special place called the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP). This point helps scientists decide where one part of the Cambrian Period ends and another begins.

The Cambrian Period is an ancient time when many animals first appeared on Earth. Paibi was chosen for this role in 2003 after being compared with other places, including one in Kazakhstan. The rocks in Paibi show clear signs of changes that happened millions of years ago.

Scientists in Paibi study tiny sea animals called trilobites. They also look at special chemicals in the rocks to learn more about Earth’s changes during this time. Because of this work, the time after this boundary is called the Paibian Age.
