Paschal Triduum

The Paschal Triduum, also called the Easter Triduum, is a special three-day time in Christianity. It begins with an evening service on Maundy Thursday. It becomes most important during the Easter Vigil, and it finishes with evening prayers on Easter Sunday. These days remember big events in the life of Jesus, as told in the canonical Gospels.

Different Christian groups do these days a little differently. For example, in the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, and Reformed traditions, these days connect the seasons of Lent and Easter. In the Roman Catholic Church, since changes in 1955, the Triduum stands alone from Lent and Easter.

In the past, these services started earlier in the day. Today, after part of the service on Maundy Thursday, many churches do not use bells or organs until Easter Sunday. Some churches also do not have weddings during these holy days, to show respect and focus on what these services mean.

Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday)

In many Christian traditions, the special three days begin on the evening of Maundy Thursday. During a special service called the Mass of the Lord's Supper, church bells may ring and organs may play at first. After a talk or message in the service, there is often a special ritual of washing of the feet. The service ends with a quiet procession to a special place called the altar of repose.

In older ways of doing the service, the Mass happened in the morning. Some people would visit seven different churches. Today, the service usually happens in the evening. The colour of the clothes worn by leaders and the decorations in the church can be white, scarlet, or gold, depending on the tradition.

Good Friday

Good Friday is a special day for Christians. On this day, they remember when Jesus was crucified. During services, people may see a cross and show respect by kneeling or bowing.

Churches often use red to remind people of Jesus' sacrifice, or sometimes black. Each church has its own way to observe this important day.

Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday, sometimes called Black Saturday, is a special service held either in the evening of Holy Saturday or before dawn on Easter Sunday. It remembers Jesus' death, his quiet rest, and a story about his journey.

During this service, there is a ceremony with darkness turning into light. A special candle, called the paschal candle, is lit from a new fire. This candle represents Jesus coming back to life. Everyone walks in a procession carrying this light to the altar. After this, people listen to readings from old stories.

Later in the service, the church lights come back on, and the organ and bells are used again. The paschal candle is used to bless the water for baptisms. This is a meaningful day for people becoming full members of the church through Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. The church is decorated in white and gold, and white and yellow flowers are often used. Easter Masses are held throughout the day, similar to the Easter Vigil Mass.

Eastertide

Easter is a special time for many Christians. The date of Easter changes each year. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon that happens on or after March 21.

During Easter, churches often change their decorations. For example, on Maundy Thursday, the church may look simple with dim lights. But by Easter Sunday, the church is bright and beautiful, with white and gold colors, celebrating Jesus' resurrection. The Easter season lasts for 50 days, ending with Pentecost Sunday. During this time, special clothes called vestments are usually white or gold.
