History
Rice University began because of a man named William Marsh Rice from Massachusetts. In 1891, Rice wanted to start a school in Houston, Texas, where students would not have to pay to learn. Sadly, Rice died in 1900, and there were issues with his plans. After learning more about what Rice wanted, the school was finally built with lots of money.
The school, named the Rice Institute, opened in 1912 with 59 students. Over time, it grew and added new subjects to study. In 1960, it changed its name to Rice University. The school now has many areas of study and covers a big area. It has worked with important groups like NASA and has built many buildings and programs through the years.
