The San Francisco Peninsula is a peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area that separates San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. It is an important part of California. On its northern tip is the City and County of San Francisco, while its southern base includes cities like Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale, located in Santa Clara County.

Most of the Peninsula is part of San Mateo County. This area includes many cities and towns such as Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, East Palo Alto, and many others. These communities make up a vibrant part of the Bay Area.

Sometimes, people refer to "The Peninsula" to talk about the areas outside of San Francisco city itself. This helps to distinguish between the city and the surrounding regions. The Peninsula is known for its mix of urban and natural spaces, making it a special place to live and visit.

History

In 1795, a leader named Diego de Borica gave a big piece of land called Rancho de las Pulgas to José Darío Argüello. This land was the largest on the peninsula and covered 35,260 acres (142.7 km2).

The area known as "the Peninsula" is the part south of San Francisco. Many towns around here, like Pacifica and Daly City, are closely connected to San Francisco. The east side of the peninsula has many homes, while the west and south-central parts are more quiet and natural.

A big part of Silicon Valley is on the peninsula. This is where some of the world's biggest tech companies, like Google and Apple, have their main offices. Recently, there have been more droughts and wildfires, making it harder to keep enough water for everyone.
