Sete Lagoas, which means 'Seven Lagoons' in Portuguese, is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The city covers an area of 537 km2. In 2025, about 238,909 people lived there. Sete Lagoas is known for its natural beauty and strong community life.

Geography

Location

Sete Lagoas is a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is about 70 kilometres from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. The city is linked to Belo Horizonte and Brasília by a major road called BR 040. Sete Lagoas is next to several other towns.

Climate

Sete Lagoas has a warm climate. From 1961 to 1990, the average temperature was about 21°C. July is the coolest month, averaging about 18°C. February is the warmest month, averaging about 23°C.

Statistical Micro-region of Sete Lagoas

Sete Lagoas is part of a group of 20 nearby towns called a statistical micro-region. In 2000, this area had 341,568 people living in 8,560.40 km². The towns include:

Economy

The city of Sete Lagoas has an economy based on services, industry, and farming. In 2005, the value of goods and services was R$2 billion 800 million. Services were worth R$1 billion 120 million, industry R$1 billion 250 thousand, and farming R$17 million. The city had many factories with many workers, including a large plant that makes trucks and vans. Heavy industry, like making pig iron, was also important with many factories.

Health and education

In 2005, Sete Lagoas had many places for people to get help when they are sick. There were public and private health clinics and hospitals with beds for patients.

Children could go to many schools, including primary, middle, and pre-primary schools. There were also private colleges and a big public university where students studied subjects like food and farming.

History

People lived in the area of Sete Lagoas long ago, before European settlers came. You can still see evidence of this in a place called the Gruta Rei do Mato, also known as the Cave of the Forest King.

Around the year 1700, people came to Minas Gerais looking for gold, gems, and diamonds. Even today, one part of the city is still called “o garimpo,” which means “the goldmine.” The city of Sete Lagoas was officially founded in 1867. Even though its name means “Seven Lakes,” there are actually more than seven lakes there now. Some were dug out, and others became part of the city as it grew. There are seven lakes that the city officially recognizes. They are: Lagoa da Boa Vista, Lagoa da Catarina, Lagoa da Chácara, Lagoa do Cercadinho, Lagoa José Felix, Lagoa do Matadouro and Lagoa Paulino.

Food

Food is very important in Minas Gerais. In Sete Lagoas, you can find two special dishes: Galopé and Muchacho. Galopé uses chicken and pork feet. Muchacho has chicken, pork, and cheese.

Sports

Sete Lagoas has several football teams, including Bela Vista Futebol Clube and Democrata Futebol Clube. Bela Vista is special because it was the only team from the city to travel through Europe in 1959. They even played against the famous team Real Madrid.

Democrata Futebol Clube plays its home games at Arena do Jacaré, also called the Alligator Arena because of their team mascot. These two teams used to have exciting matches called the "Clássico dos sertões," or the Countryside's Derby.

Other football clubs in the city include Ideal Sport Club and América Futebol Clube. In 2010 and 2011, Arena do Jacaré was also used by teams from Belo Horizonte while their own stadiums were being updated.
